Sole DXB; Dubai's biggest street culture festival returns bringing urban culture to the world stage for the 6th year running. With talk of the success of last years festival still lingering in conversations almost a year later, it’s only right Sole wrap up this year with something epic. Dubai Design District (d3); the home of Dubai’s design community hosts Sole DXB 2017 as they continue to build legacy in the region for another year running.
Keeping youth & creativity at the forefront of the 3-day festival Sole combines emerging artists, designers, musicians and brands to pioneer street culture within the region. With a core motive to take street style to a wider audience Sole nurtures a cutting edge in style and innovation in order to celebrate urban youth culture.
On the 7th, 8th + 9th December all roads will lead to the Dubai Design District where fans and festival goers will experience an event like never before. Some of this years attractions will include Pusha T, GoldLink, Kano, IAMDDB, Patta Soundsytem, Dan Greepeace, Stretch Armstrong, Yassine Saidi, David Fisher, Jay Smith, the Ball Above All basketball tournament and many more. If you don’t know any of the names mentioned feel free to research them - it will definitely be worth it. Well known for its very strong brand collaborations and sponsors Sole continues to enhance relationships with brands such as Nike, Puma, Reebok, Crep Protect & New Era. Introducing Beyonce’s Ivy Park line to the mix alongside fashion brands Kenzo, Fila and Levis all eyes will be on the district over the weekend long festival.
Urban culture has gained huge popularity across the globe, growing from roots in hip-hop into one of the fastest growing lifestyle industries that has ever touched every aspect of design. Sole along with partners aim to bridge the gap between the UAE region and the rest of the world by providing a platform where creatives from the region can shine alongside other world leading creatives. Sole executes this by using a blend of some of the finest stars from the UK & US and have been doing so over the past few years.
For example Dubai is very much inspired by the UK urban music scene which was evident last year alone where we saw the likes of Stormzy, Skepta, Chip, Little Simz and Slocal shelling the stage all in one weekend and also saw fashion retailers Trapstar London & Crep Protect representing the UK at large (See Highlights here). The UK Urban music scene has seen rapid growth over the last year with artists such as Giggs, J Hus, Stormzy and Steflon Don all experiencing huge levels of success. In light of that there is no doubt there will be some sort of UK presence shelling the stages this year.
Recently announced, East London rapper & Grime veteran; Kano will be headlining Friday night at the festival showing the d3 community what the UK is all about. The MOBO Award winner and BRIT nominee has a number songs in his catalogue that will definitely have the crowd going crazy. Also adding to the line up this year is Manchester born; IAMDDB as she will be bringing fresh sounds in what she describes as ‘Urban Jazz’ to the region. The UK rapper is the latest bad-ass female to come out of the UK and we haven’t even seen the best of what is to come ourselves so we hope Dubai is ready for her.
As well as the UK Scene making major moves this year there has also been a lot of interesting acts to come out of the states such as Washington, DC rapper GoldLink who will be doing his thing on stage at Sole this year. Releasing his debut studio album earlier this year, the albums lead single ‘Crew’ peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 where we were also blessed with fresh visuals to accompany the single. However Sole wouldn’t be Sole if they didn’t bring a legend to grace the stages at d3. GOOD Music president; Pusha T will headline Saturday night at Sole making it one to remember.
As well as the UK & US talent taking stage this year lets not forget the talent that the home side would be putting out. It's fair to say we’re in for a treat this year for sure and Sole as usual may have something up their sleeve; so could it be the latest sensation to come out of London Michael Dapaah aka Big Shaq to perform ‘Man’s Not Hot’ well even if it was him he’s definitely going to have to take off his jacket but thats just speculation so we’ll leave it up to you to stay tuned in.
There is no doubt that Sole DXB set the bar high at last years Sole but with the quality in this years collaborations it will surely have the ability to top last year. With strong key partners such as Cadillac, Coca Cola and Samsung we’re sure Sole DXB will be putting on a show for the region. Head over to @SoleDXB on all major social media platforms to keep up to date on what will be going on in the lead up to the event including the latest fashion collaborations and live social feeds during the event.
